What’s the Best Kind of Pipe for Smoking Weed?
Legal, recreational marijuana is coming to more states with every election, and that means more people may want to try it. To help these weed newbies (much of the Lifehacker staff included), we’re covering all the basics for beginners.
In this video, John Short of California Alternative Caregivers in Venice, California explains the main types of pipe you may encounter, and the benefits to each. (Did you know bongs can be made out of silicone? Neither did I!) Some of these pipes may have a carb—a small hole to promote airflow—and he shows how to use that, too.
As Short says in the video, all you need is the pipe of your choice, some ground up cannabis, and you’re good to go.

Or the best way to CONSUME is *not* smoking.
It’s 2019. It’s also a shame that “smoke” is somehow still considered the means to consume cann a bis . (And is nearly synonymous for consumption.)
Sure it works. Works with minimal tools. (Apple and a match, anyone?) Worked for most of our history. But absolutely unnecessary in this day and age.
You need to elevate the compounds to a specific temperature point, granted . But certainly NOT to the point of combustion (
455°F). That doesn’t get you anything but tar and carcinogens.
Plus it is fairly wasteful as some of your product. well. goes up in smoke.
There are plenty of other solutions that don’t involve producing tars, toxins, and carcinogens.
Vaping is an obvious one. Unfortunately, the recent e-cig fad has kinda put a negative on all vaping (stupid greasy kids). But vaping in the MMJ world has been around for a few decades now.
It works by raising the temp to anything BUT the point of consumption, and essentially “boiling off” the compounds you seek. Effectively: S team. So nothing burns.
Plus added bonus of being able to selectively target specific compounds/effects. If you want a lighter head-high for daytime , for example, stay down around 360°F or slightly higher. If you want more “couch lock”, go for >405°F.
You can’t be that selective when you are just burning the flower.
Plenty of other options, such as edibles, or oils (pay attention to extraction method, however ), etc., etc.
But just sad in 2019 that smoking is promoted as the only way to consume, without even a warning about it, nor any mention that there are “cleaner” ways to consume.Legal, recreational marijuana is coming to more states with every election, and that means more people may want to try it.
