A new retail cannabis dispensary permitted to operate in Old Town Eureka looks to open before year’s end, though an accompanying on-site consumption lounge will have to wait, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Hygro, which already has two established pot farms in Humboldt County, will look to add a “farm-to-table” marijuana dispensary to its businesses. The shop will join a crowded list of pot retailers occupying storefronts around Eureka.
Earlier this year, owner Bryan Robinson secured a permit for the 500 block of Fifth Street from the city’s planning commission. He’s now in the process of obtaining a state license.
“There have been a couple of struggles, especially on the licensing side, of getting other phases up and running,” Robinson said Thursday. “The city and the county have been really great about dealing with us through the pandemic.”
Robinson anticipates that securing a state license will be easier for a retail business than on the cultivation end. The latter raises all sorts of environmental checks and balances, but retail licenses take about two-to-three months to process, he said.
Hygro’s two cannabis farms in the area — in Fortuna and on Elk River south of Eureka — offer a bevy of different marijuana products. The business partners with other local pot companies.
At the planning commission hearing in May, Domino’s Pizza branch owner Rick Gaube called in to caution against approving yet another cannabis dispensary in Old Town.
Existing dispensaries in Eureka, meanwhile, had already seen enough new arrivals by the end of last year, echoing concerns at the time about market saturation and the possibility of a price-drop as a result.
But Robinson echoed Thursday what he said in May: More competition is healthy for the local pot industry.
“It’s one of those things where, if my wife wants to go shopping for dresses, we go to four or five shops, not just one,” he said.
