In the early days of legalization in Colorado, New York Times writer Maureen Dowd took a biteof a cannabis-infused candy bar. Hours later, she was “curled up in a hallucinatory state” unable to get up from her bed.

Compare that to rapper, entrepreneur and pop culture personality Snoop Dogg (previously Snoop Lion). He has said he smokes 81 “blunts” a day.

Now, a blunt is typically larger than a joint, which is like a cigarette filled with cannabis instead of tobacco. If one bite of a candy bar laced with THC can send a woman into temporary madness, imagine what 81 blunts a day, or around 29,500 per year, can do.

Of course, Snoop is no average stoner. He is known as much for his cannabis use as his music. Mary Jane features prominently in every music video. And he’s capitalized off his stoner reputation with the media website Merry Jane and brand Leafs by Snoop (Fun fact: The logo and use of the word “leafs” landed him in a trademark dispute with the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise).

But even under the assumption he is high pretty much all the time, some pedantic redditors have questioned Snoop’s self-reported cannabis consumption.

“That’s a blunt every 8 min assuming one sleeps 8 hours. This isn’t snoop lion, this is snoop lyin,” wrote one commentor. If you’re doing the math, that’s actually one blunt about every 12 minutes during waking hours, not eight.

“81 blunts a day?” wrote another exasperated redditor.

A 2016 study from the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence suggests there may be grounds for their skepticism. Researchers Greg Ridgeway and Beau Kilmer examined data on thousands of cannabis transactions between 2000 and 2010. The data came from interviews with arrestees gathered by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Conveniently, arrestees are asked how much they paid for their drugs and what they purchased,” wrote the study’s authors.

The researchers built a model to calculate the average weight of a joint, and concluded that a typical joint contains just .34 grams of cannabis, way less than previously reported.

One study from 2010 estimated the average joint to contain about .45 grams. Another study released the following year estimated the weight to be closer to .66 grams.

Ridgeway and Kilmer noted that discussions in online forums put the weight of cannabis in a typical joint at between 0.5 grams and 1 gram, which is approximately the amount of tobacco in a cigarette.

So, Snoop could be smoking less than he thinks. And, as redditors point out, he could be including the blunts he shares with friends in his calculations. Not to mention, self-reported data can be unreliable.

“Indeed, it is difficult to collect accurate information on quantity consumed,” the two researchers wrote. “Many users do not precisely know (or remember) how many grams they consumed during the previous use day.”

How much does 81 blunts a day cost?

There is no known standard for the price of a blunt. The researchers Ridgeway and Kilmer looked at this too. According to their 2016 data, the median price of a joint was US$3.33. So, an 81-joint-per-day habit is worth approximately $1,888 per week, or nearly $100,000 per year.
