Welcome to Outdoor Aquaponics

Aquaponics farming is getting increasingly popular for many reasons. Aquaponics is but one element of a massive cultural shift that brings nutritious food nearer to the people and recreates culture around food. Read More .

AQUAPONICS

A system that does not need weeding, fertilizers and bending and it only makes use of the same power that it takes to run a few light globes.

Basics

Aquaponics can either be simple or complex depending on how you want it to be. There are several methods that you can use. Any hydroponic process can also be used in Read More .

Plants

Get an idea about the kinds of plants you can grow in an Aquaponics system. These plants have been grown in various Aquaponics systems and not just from a single one. Read More .

There are so many species of fish that you can use in your Aquaponic system but these species of fish will depend on your climate and the availability of supplies. Read More .

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a mixture of Aquaculture as well as Hydroponics. The two, Hydroponics and Aquaculture both have disadvantages. Hydroponics demand costly nutrients in feeding the plants, in addition, it also needs frequent flushing of its systems, this could lead to an increase in waste disposal. In order to recirculate the needs of aquaculture, excess nutrients have to be discarded out of the system and when this happens this could only mean that a fraction of the water is taken away, normally on a day-to-day basis.

The discarded water, which is basically rich in nutrients are then replaced with fresh water. Although recirculating hydroponics and aquaculture are very resourceful techniques of producing vegetables and fish, when we start to add the two negatives, surprisingly the outcomes become positives. The quality and practical features of hydroponics and aquaculture are preserved and the negatives cease to exist. Talking about Aquaponics, it can either be simple or complex depending on how you want it to be. A simple system like the one showed below is actually made from a single IBC or Intermediate Bulk Container. The topmost area was removed and positioned upside down turning it into a grow bed for the plants. From the fish tank, water is pumped up and channeled to the grow bed. The water dribbles through the media and goes past the roots of the plant before it drains back to the fish tank. Read More …

Aquaponics is the art of growing both fish and vegetable plants or herbs together in an interrelated system The fish produce waste products that contain crucial nutrients plants need, while the plants provide natural filtration and water cleaning. These systems can be set up indoors or outside, depending on the climate and your goals for production.

Don’t Let the Fish Freeze

Numerous commercial and home aquaponics systems are located outdoors, according to Medill School at Northwestern University. This allows the owners to take advantage of sunlight and natural warmth rather than paying for heating and artificial lighting. However, this is most common in warm climates because cold temperatures can freeze the water and kill the fish and plants.

Protecting the Tanks

Direct sunlight can also overheat the water tanks and hurt the fish. All the fish commonly used for aquaponics are sensitive to temperature changes and high temperatures, so shade structures are usually required for tanks located outdoors. Pests also have better access to the growing plants when the system is outside.

The Threat of Evaporation

When the system is located outdoors, water levels must be monitored more closely due to the ongoing process of evaporation, which is minimized inside a greenhouse or other indoor space. The pumps running the system will burn out if allowed to run dry.
