Cannabis strain reviews for the connoisseur

Royal Raspberry

NOTE: Unlike most of our reviews, this is actually a photo of the actual weed we smoked and reviewed. The photo doesn’t do its loveliness justice, but we couldn’t find any pictures of Royal Raspberry online, so we had no choice but to resort to a bad photo of our own stuff.

Name: Royal Raspberry

Heritage: Royal Kush x Raspberry Kush. A pure indica, or close to it. If there’s any sativa or ruderalis in this weed, we can’t detect it.

Looks: Decent-sized, reasonably dense, but not rock like, indica style nugs. Lovely purple hues, very richly colored. Looks sugared, very respectable crystallage. We can’t overstate how attractive this bag of RR is. If you tried to design bud, visually, just to appeal to Dragon, you’d come up with something very much like this. In addition to being reasonably large, colorful, and kief-laden, Royal Raspberry buds – at least the ones we have as of this writing – are shapely and elegant. They look more like actual dried flowers than weed usually does. (We know that marijuana is the flowers of the cannabis plant, but we also know that most buds doesn’t resemble the average person’s idea of what a flower looks like.)

Aroma: The resemblance isn’t exact, but the best way to describe RR’s flavor is, well…raspberries. But cream, too, and a strong Kush ‘fuel’ or ‘herbal’ pungency. Occasionally there are hints of an unusual nectar-esque smell, bringing honey to mind. Honey isn’t quite right, but it’s the closest we can come to describing this undertone of complex, slightly sour-sweetness. Overall the aroma reminds Dragon a bit of Purple Cream.

Flavor: Similar to aroma, but the Kushy pungency is more prominent on the inhale than the berriness detectable in the scent. That sour-sweetness which was subtle in the aroma is much stronger in the flavor, taking on a pronounced earthy edge. Again, shades of Purple Cream, mostly in that creamy-soft mouth feel. On the exhale, meanwhile, it’s a breath of sour raspberry and just a bit of Kushy smoothness. This strain was named after its parents, but the name is appropriate. Even if we didn’t know what this stuff was called, the raspberry presence in the smell and taste is unmistakable, if not as sweet as some might expect. Of course this isn’t the literal taste of the fruit we’re talking about, but at the same time, it’s impossible to describe it as anything else.

Texture: Grinds into fluffy, sort of coarse bits that are velvety-greasy with kief. Lights easily but didn’t burn out of control – had to use lighter butt, not cupped hand, to put it out though. Smoke is medium-thick but very smooth, goes down easy. Dragon did not cough. Chimera coughed a little.

Effects: Lung expanding, relaxing, definite couch lock potential at higher doses. Relieved Dragon’s back pain and insomnia effectively. At low to moderate doses, this strain is soothing but not sedating, perhaps slowing one down a bit but still allowing one to focus and get things done. Still both Dragon and Chimera consider this strain to be nighttime or lazy-day weed. Also useful for meditation, but don’t fall asleep!

Dragon Sez: A recent favorite. Have only seen it at one dispensary so far and it’s not on Leafly yet as of our adding this, so I decided to make it our first official strain reviewed. I’ve bought it twice so far and will definitely buy again.

Royal Raspberry is a purple Indica that deserves its name, with its regal looks and raspberry-flavored smoke. Any king or queen would want this in their treasury – or their garden!
