wedding cake in spanish

A Slice of the Good Stuff

How important is it to have a wedding cake? In Spanish weddings the presentation is one of the highlights during the reception. The Groom will put his jacket back on if he’s taken it off, all cameras are ready to snap!

The caterers will roll it out on a serving trolley, a special piece of music will be playing, sparklers and mini fireworks are lit on it. The Maitre D will proudly present a big sword or knife to the couple who then cut it. A pair of wedding dolls are given as a present from the caterers to the newlyweds. To some guests surprise if not forewarned the cake then disappears again, the bride and groom are given a glass of Cava to toast with. The cake then miraculously appears nicely served on plates for everyone to enjoy.

Sauleda caterers originated in the pastry business 46 years ago with only Salvador the late owner and a friend. Now they have three pastry shops around Catalonia and are a popular catering company. Sandra, Salvador’s daughter now runs the business and one of the strengths they have is their selection of cakes, skewers, chocolates, mousses and pastries for dessert. A big old mirror is presented with a small cake for the couple to cut. The mirror is full of flowers, colours and scents from all the goodies and it’s let close to the head table. Smaller mirrors are then set on every table and guests have a wide range of choice. This heightens the experience as guests share, recommend, wonder what a little cake might contain and so on. Second or third helpings are made from the main mirror.

You can also customize your wedding cake. Both Betty’s bakery and Barcelona Cakes work with pictures couples send them from Pinterest, then you choose the flavour. Gill sent us a Pinterest picture and the cake was exactly how she imagined it, a lace patterned dream of a creation!

Victoria and Daniel from Sweden (not the crown princess couple, we are not royal wedding planners just yet), share the love of sailing and to them the wedding cake was a highlight of their big day.
Bettina from Betty’s Bakery made a cake with anchors and ropes and it was rich with chocolate, divine!
